The castle of Ľubovňa is situated on a limestone cliff which is 711 m high. It was constructed in the second half of the 13th century in the northern border region of the kingdom of Hungary where it served to protect an important trade route to Poland. The meetings of Polish and Hungarian kings often took place in here. In 1412, Sigismund of Luxemburg gave the castle and 13 other towns in the region of Spiš to the deed to Władysław II Jagiełło, the king of Poland. From 1656 to 1661, the Polish Crown Jewels were stored here. Nowadays, their copies are exhibited in the castle chapel – the crown, the coronation apple, the coronation sceptre and the coronation cloak of Stanisław August Poniatowski. The castle’s lively history is also connected with the name of an adventurer, the king of Madagascar, Móric Beňovský who was imprisoned in the castle of Ľubovňa in 1768. Below the castle, an open-air museum can be found – 25 objects dominated by a rustic church from Matysová.
