Levoča is one of the most beautiful historical towns in Slovakia. In the town, a lot of monuments are conserved – the church of Saint Jacob, the Town Hall, the Evangelic church, a medieval stake – the cage of shame and over 60 burghers’ houses forming the Square of Master Paul. The square maintained its medieval shape of a rectangle with sides of the proportion 3:1 and it is one of the biggest squares of this type in Europe. Together with the preserved Gothic, Renaissance and Early-Baroque patrician houses with arcadian inner courtyards, it witnesses the wealth of the town in the Middle Ages. Alongside the historical centre, there are preserved parts of the Gothic town fortification from 14th and 15th century, which are two kilometres long. Several bastions, towers, Košice gate and Menhardt gate are being reconstructed. Since 2009, the historical centre of Levoča together with the work of Master Paul have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
